Martha Stamps Gives Cooking Demo

June 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM

The Nashville Farmers’ Market is excited to welcome beloved Nashville chef Martha Stamps to The Market Kitchen in Farm Shed 1 this Saturday, June 3rd. Martha will give a free cooking demo using produce and product fresh from our farmers to make a Summer Vegetable Tartine with Carrot Turmeric Puree. The recipe will be distributed afterwards for audience members to sample.

The Market Kitchen is a program of the Nashville Farmers’ Market that partners local chefs and cooks with Market merchants for a live cooking demo the first and third Saturday of every month at 11 am.

Martha, who began cooking standing on a stool in her grandmother’s kitchen on Cedar Lane in Nashville’s historic Belmont neighborhood, was an “earth to table” chef long before the term farm-to-table became a buzzword, staking that ground when she was the opening chef at The Yellow Porch restaurant almost 20 years ago. The Culinary Institute of America graduate, chef, caterer, cookbook author and food activist was also owner of Martha’s at The Plantation and Bergamot Market.

Recently, she took on the role of culinary director at The Café at Thistle Farms. The Café, the culinary and community gathering component of Thistle Farms, offers a globally inspired, locally sourced and produce-driven breakfast and lunch menu, and features Nashville’s only daily tea service. It is part of the internationally-acclaimed Thistle Farms social enterprise which heals, empowers and employs women survivors of trafficking, prostitution and addition. Its bath, beauty, healing and home products are carried in every Whole Foods store in the country, and shipped around the world.

After an extensive renovation, The Café at Thistle Farms will re-open in July, 2017 at 5122 Charlotte Pike. But meanwhile, Market shoppers can get sample some of the goodness Martha will be cooking up for The Café.  The free demonstration with samples will take place at 11 am under Farm Shed 1 in Stalls #192 and #193, closest to Gardens of Babylon. Enjoy your garden-fresh veggie sandwich, then mosey on over to check out the garden goodies at our year-round garden center!

July 5th - You say To-may-to, I say To-mah-to. However you say it, we all speak the universal language of love for summer tomatoes. Class memebers will taste all the differet varieties of tomatoes grown by our farmers and sold at the Market, and learn some simple recipes using tomatoes with other in-season produce and market product.

August 2nd The Nashville Farmers’ Market welcomes Jilah Kalil, cook, food activist and founder of the just-launched Cooking Up cooking school that is launching at the Market. https://www.cookingup.org/ In the last class of the NCEC Summer Series, Jilah will share her mission to give back through cooking and invites you to cool off with peach salsa, peach gazpacho and tomato gazpacho, using farm fresh produce from the Market.

Farmers’ Market Executive Director Tasha Kennard will demonstrate the big chill: how she makes summer goodies like watermelon, blueberries and corn last into fall and winter through tried-and-tested freezing techniques.
